Growing up on a small island teaches you to notice how things connect. Resources are limited, systems are easier to see, and decisions rarely affect just one person. I carried that perspective with me from Aruba to The Hague.

I'm Jonathan Arends, a Lead UX & Product Designer with 14 years of experience working on complex projects in the public sector, from government services and financial regulation to critical national infrastructure. My work sits between product design, service design, and the modernization of large and complicated systems. I like making those systems easier to understand and easier to use.

Outside of work, I write, photograph, and dive into whatever I happen to be curious about.

A lot of my best work is invisible. If a system feels obvious and works reliably without getting in your way, that's usually a good sign.
